Technology-Enabled Business Transformation
Technology-enabled business transformation (TEBT) projects fundamentally change business processes, supply-chain processes, or customer facing processes, through the application of technology. It's important to note that in these projects the new transformed business processes couldn't exist without the new technology. At the very least, the new processes would be incredibly inefficient without the technology - they may even seem bureaucratic. How are TEBT projects different? TEBT projects are not just automation projects. True TEBT requires business process innovation to a level that the resulting business process cannot exist without the supporting technology. This characteristic means TEBT projects cannot be managed like other IT projects. In fact, most failed IT projects are just mismanaged TEBT projects. Similarly, IT projects which are nominally labeled a success (usually by the IT project manager) but fail to deliver their expected benefits are conceived as TEBT projects but managed as automation projects. What are the characteristics of TEBT projects? A TEBT project is an IT project with the following characteristics: * business process refined with system * business process implied by system * business process cannot exist - or is inefficient - without the system Why are TEBT projects important to the MWT model? The MWT Model is partially enabled by advances in communication and information processing technology. This may seem technocratic at first, but it's no more technocratic than utilising a centralised information repository and trading functionality to enable a modern stock exchange. The values of voluntary public ownership and property rights remain theoretical without the supporting technical infrastructure of a stock exchange. Even if basic trading is not dependent on such technology, advances in technology actually enable more sophisticated derivative trading options and opportunities for ownership. Along with operationalised brands and collaboration architectures, the third pillar of the MWT Model is technology-enabled markets. These inter- or intra- organisational markets create the same risk management and transparency infrastructure that a stock market creates. However, the technology-enabled markets create that infrastructure for business processes rather than capital management. Implementation of the MWT Model therefore includes the implementation of one or more technology-enabled markets within your organisation. The implementation of such a market mets all of the characteristics of a TEBT project. TEBT projects have historically been high-risk. Nobody wants their organisation's transformation to be dependent on high-risk projects (and IT projects in particular). The MWT/TEBT Collaboration Architecture has been developed based on MWT principles to ensure TEBT projects complete successfully. How is delivery of a TEBT project different? As for all MWT Collaboration Architectures, MWT/TEBT provides all of the information that a diverse group of professions needs to share in order to successfully collaborate and deliver on an endeavor - in this case the endeavor is a technology-enabled business transformation project.
